A wheelset is only as good as its setup. This section covers the things that decide whether new carbon wheels feel excellent on the first ride or end up back in a workshop: tyre fit, tubeless sealing, pressure, freehub choice, rotor mounting and axle compatibility.
Tubeless is where most first-time carbon owners spend an evening. Rim bed, tape and valve have to work together before a tyre will hold air, and a rim that refuses to seat is almost always a tape or valve problem rather than a tyre problem. Pressure is the second thing riders get wrong. Wider internal rims change the calculation — a 25mm internal width rim running a 28–30mm tyre does not need the pressures a narrow rim of five years ago demanded. Too much pressure costs grip and comfort and makes a stiff wheel feel harsh. Compatibility is the part to read before ordering. Shimano HG and SRAM XDR freehub bodies are not interchangeable and the wrong choice means the cassette will not go on — see HG vs XDR. Axle standards vary by frame (thru-axle vs quick release, Boost 148), Centerlock and 6-bolt rotors are not cross-compatible (Centerlock vs 6-bolt), and valve length has to suit rim depth.
