How to Inspect Carbon Wheels After a Pothole, Crash or Hard Impact

A hard pothole hit, crash, rock strike, or unexpected bottom-out can leave a rider wondering whether a carbon wheel is still safe to ride. The right answer is not guesswork. A quick look can help you decide what to document next, but it cannot replace manufacturer guidance or a support review when damage is suspected.

This guide explains a conservative inspection workflow for TOCCAY riders. It does not claim that every wheel can be cleared visually. If you see cracks, deformation, sudden pressure loss, unusual spoke tension, rotor rub, hub play, or a change in ride feel, stop riding and contact TOCCAY before continuing.

Start With the Situation, Not the Wheel Alone

Write down what happened before inspecting the wheel. A square-edge pothole, sideways crash, curb impact, loose-rock hit, or hard landing can stress different parts of the system. Note speed, tire pressure if known, tire size, surface, rider and luggage load, and whether the tire lost air immediately.

Do not keep riding simply because the wheel still spins. A wheel can look mostly normal but still deserve a closer check if the impact was severe or the handling changed afterward.

Immediate Stop-Riding Warning Signs

  • Visible crack, split, dent, soft spot, or delamination on the rim.
  • Tire bead no longer seated evenly.
  • Rapid pressure loss or sealant spray after impact.
  • New wobble, hop, brake rub, or scraping sound.
  • Loose, broken, or sharply uneven spokes.
  • Hub play, rough rotation, or rotor movement after the incident.

If any of these signs appear, treat the wheel as needing support review. Do not add high pressure, continue descending, or ride far from help just to “test” it.

Rim and Tire Interface Check

Inspect the entire rim slowly in good light. Look at both sidewalls, the bead seat area, spoke-hole area, valve area, and the section nearest the impact. For tubeless setups, check whether the tire bead is still seated evenly on both sides. Also inspect the tire casing and tread; tire damage can hide or mimic wheel damage.

Do not use tools to pry or force a suspicious bead area back into place. If the rim or tire interface looks abnormal, document it and contact support.

Spokes, Nipples, Hub, and Rotor Area

Spin the wheel in the bike or a stand and watch for lateral wobble or vertical hop. Check whether any spokes feel extremely loose compared with their neighbors. Look near nipples and spoke holes for small cracks or distortion. Then inspect the hub, axle interface, rotor area, and cassette/freehub side for unusual movement.

A five-minute post-impact inspection sequence

  1. Stop and stabilize the bicycle. Do not test the wheel at speed or continue descending while symptoms are unknown.
  2. Check pressure and bead position. Look for rapid air loss, sealant spray, casing cuts or a bead line that is no longer even.
  3. Clean and inspect the rim. Use good light and examine both sidewalls, the tire-seat area, valve area and spoke entries.
  4. Spin the wheel slowly. Watch for lateral wobble, vertical hop, rotor contact and changes near the impact location.
  5. Document before changing parts. Photograph the complete setup and close-ups before removing the tire, tape, rotor or cassette unless immediate safety requires otherwise.

A visual check cannot certify internal condition. The sequence helps identify obvious warning signs and gives support better evidence; it is not a substitute for qualified inspection when the impact was severe or the wheel behaves differently.

Useful angles usually include the full wheel, the suspected damage area, the tire bead area, valve area, hub/freehub side, rotor side, and any close-up with a ruler or reference object. Keep the wheel, tire, cassette, rotor, and axle setup as close as possible to the condition in which the problem appeared unless support instructs otherwise.

What Not to Do Before Review

  • Do not sand, glue, clamp, heat, or repair a suspicious carbon area.
  • Do not overinflate a tire to see whether the bead will “settle.”
  • Do not continue riding if the wheel has visible structural damage.
  • Do not discard damaged tires, rim tape, valves, or related parts before documenting them.

Can I ride home after a hard impact?

If there is no visible damage, no pressure loss, no wobble, no spoke issue, and the bike feels normal, some riders may carefully return home. If anything looks or feels abnormal, stop and arrange safer transport.

Can a carbon rim be damaged without a visible crack?

It is possible for symptoms to appear through pressure loss, bead seating issues, unusual sounds, or ride-feel changes. When uncertain, contact support instead of assuming the wheel is fine.

Does tubeless sealant hide damage?

Sealant can temporarily slow air loss, but it does not confirm the rim or tire is safe. Check the tire, bead, valve and rim carefully.
