Thru Axle vs Quick Release: Which One Does Your Bike Need?

If you are upgrading your bike wheels, one of the first compatibility questions to answer is whether your bike uses a thru axle or quick release.

A thru axle passes through the fork or frame and the wheel hub before threading into the opposite side. A quick-release system uses a much thinner skewer to clamp the wheel into open dropouts.

What Is a Thru Axle?

A thru axle is a relatively large-diameter axle that passes through one side of the fork or frame, through the hub, and then threads or locks into the opposite side.

Unlike a quick-release skewer, the axle itself becomes part of the wheel-retention structure.

This design is widely used on modern disc-brake bikes because it provides consistent wheel positioning and a secure interface between the frame, fork, and hub.

Typical modern road and gravel bikes often use:

  • 12×100 mm front
  • 12×142 mm rear

Many modern mountain bikes use Boost spacing such as:

These are common standards, not universal rules. Always verify your specific bike.

What Does 12×100 Mean?

In a specification such as 12×100 mm, 12 mm refers to the axle diameter and 100 mm refers to the hub spacing at the front.

Similarly, 12×142 mm usually describes a 12 mm rear thru axle with 142 mm hub spacing.

However, matching the diameter and spacing does not always mean two thru axles are interchangeable. The axle can also differ in overall length, thread pitch, threaded section length, and axle-head design.

What Is a Quick Release?

A quick release, often shortened to QR, uses a thin metal skewer that passes through the hollow hub axle. A lever on one side and an adjusting nut on the other side create clamping force that holds the wheel in the bike’s dropouts.

A traditional quick-release frame or fork generally uses an open slot, allowing the wheel axle to move in and out without removing a large threaded axle.

Quick releases became popular because they make wheel removal extremely fast and convenient. They remain perfectly functional when used with bikes designed around them, but they are becoming less common on modern performance disc-brake bicycles.

Wheel Alignment

One of the most practical advantages of a thru axle is more repeatable wheel positioning. Because the axle passes directly through the hub and fixed frame or fork openings, the wheel tends to return to a very consistent position each time it is installed.

With a quick-release system, correct wheel seating depends more on how evenly the axle rests in the open dropouts before the lever is tightened. With disc brakes, small changes in wheel position can affect the relationship between the rotor and brake caliper.

Disc Brake Compatibility

Both axle systems can technically be used with disc brakes when the bicycle is designed for them. But modern performance disc-brake road, gravel, and mountain bikes overwhelmingly favor thru axles.

The more repeatable wheel position helps maintain consistent rotor alignment after removing and reinstalling a wheel. That does not mean a thru axle completely prevents brake rotor rub. Caliper alignment, rotor condition, hub bearings, and installation still matter.

Stiffness and Handling

Thru axles generally create a larger and more structurally integrated connection between the hub and the frame or fork. This can improve system stiffness, particularly under braking and cornering loads.

However, switching from quick release to thru axle does not automatically create a dramatic increase in speed. Frame design, fork design, wheel construction, tire pressure, tire size, and riding conditions all affect how a bike feels.

Weight

Quick-release skewers can be relatively light, while a thru axle is generally larger and uses more material. But the weight difference between axle systems is rarely important enough to determine which wheelset you should buy.

A QR lever can usually be opened and the wheel removed very quickly. Thru axles must generally be unscrewed and pulled through the fork or frame before the wheel can be removed.

How to Tell If Your Bike Has a Thru Axle or Quick Release

Step 1: Look at the Dropout

A quick-release dropout usually has an open slot. A thru-axle dropout normally has a closed circular opening through which the axle passes.

Step 2: Look at the Axle Itself

A thru axle is noticeably thicker than a traditional QR skewer. A quick-release skewer is much thinner and usually includes a cam lever.

Step 3: Check for Size Markings

You may see markings such as 12×100, 12×142, 15×110 or 12×148. You may also see axle length or thread-pitch information.

Step 4: Check the Bike Manufacturer’s Specification

If you are still unsure, check the specifications for your frame or complete bicycle. Do not rely only on the year or category of the bike.

Can You Convert Quick Release to Thru Axle?

Sometimes, but not always. Some hubs are designed with replaceable end caps that allow the same hub shell to work with multiple axle standards. In that situation, the hub manufacturer may offer an approved conversion kit.

Which One Should You Choose?

For most riders, this is not really a question of personal choice. Choose a thru-axle wheelset if your frame and fork are designed for thru axles. Choose a quick-release wheelset if your bicycle uses QR dropouts and the hub standard matches.

The smartest approach is: identify your current axle → confirm the dimensions → check rotor interface → check freehub → then choose the wheelset.
