HG vs XDR Installation Mistakes: Cassette Fit, Spacers, and Freehub Checks

A new rear wheel can be correctly built and still leave you with a cassette that will not slide on, a lockring that bottoms out too early, poor shifting, or a cassette that feels loose. These problems are often blamed on the wheel, but the cause is usually a mismatch between the cassette, freehub body, spacer stack, or installation sequence.

The first rule is simple: identify the exact cassette model before choosing parts. “Shimano 11-speed,” “SRAM 12-speed,” or “road cassette” is not precise enough. The model number determines the required driver, spacer arrangement, and manufacturer procedure.

A Shimano HG cassette slides over external splines and is clamped by a separate lockring. A SRAM XDR cassette uses the XDR driver interface and follows the cassette manufacturer’s XDR procedure.

  • A standard road 11-speed HG cassette often fits a road 11-speed HG body without a 1.85mm spacer, but model-specific exceptions exist.

  • Shimano CS-HG700-11 and CS-HG800-11 require a 1.85mm spacer on a road 11-speed freehub.

  • Many 8-, 9-, or 10-speed HG cassettes require a 1.85mm road bike freehub spacer on a longer road 11-speed HG body. Some Shimano 10-speed models also use an additional 1.0mm spacer.

  • An XDR-specific cassette normally installs directly on an XDR driver.

  • An XD cassette requires a 1.85mm spacer when installed on an XDR driver.

Shimano’s installation documents specify the model-dependent HG spacer combinations, including the special requirements for CS-HG700-11 and CS-HG800-11. SRAM states that XDR is 1.85mm longer than XD and that an XD cassette requires a 1.85mm spacer when used on XDR.

The last point causes many XDR cassette installation errors. The 1.85mm spacer is not a universal “SRAM spacer.” It compensates for the extra length of XDR when fitting an XD cassette. Do not add it behind an XDR-specific road cassette unless the cassette manufacturer requires it.

Mistake 1: Choosing the Freehub From the Derailleur Brand

The derailleur logo does not identify the cassette interface. Some SRAM cassettes use an HG-compatible body, while many modern SRAM road cassettes use XDR. Shimano HG also covers cassette generations with different spacer requirements.

Find the model code on the cassette—such as CS-R7000, CS-HG700-11, CS-HG800-11, or a SRAM XG model—and check its manual. Only then should you select the freehub on a new wheelset.

Mistake 2: Treating Every 1.85mm Spacer as the Same Solution

The phrase Shimano HG cassette spacer hides several different situations. On a longer road HG body, a shorter cassette stack may need a 1.85mm spacer behind it. The spacer fills unused freehub length so the lockring can clamp the cassette. Without it, the lockring may feel tight while the sprockets still move sideways.

Adding a spacer when the cassette already uses the full freehub length creates the opposite problem. The cassette may sit too far outward, the lockring may not engage enough threads, or the smallest sprocket may not seat.

Shimano’s instructions show why the exact model matters. CS-HG700-11 and CS-HG800-11 use a 1.85mm spacer on a road 11-speed body. Shimano also documents road 10-speed combinations that use the 1.85mm low spacer and, for some models, an additional 1.0mm spacer.

Do not copy the spacer stack from the old wheel unless both freehubs are the same standard and length. Lay the cassette model, freehub type, and required spacers on the bench before assembly.

Mistake 3: Confusing XD and XDR

XD and XDR are related, but XDR is 1.85mm longer. SRAM states that an XD cassette fits an XDR driver with a 1.85mm spacer behind it. An XDR cassette is intended for the XDR driver and normally does not use that spacer.

This matters when moving a cassette between wheelsets. An XD cassette on XDR without the spacer can remain under-clamped. Adding the spacer behind an XDR cassette can prevent correct seating.

For XDR cassette installation, clean the driver and cassette interface, apply grease where the manufacturer specifies, start the cassette by hand, and confirm smooth thread engagement. SRAM’s referenced service instructions specify 40 N·m for XD/XDR cassette installation. Follow the manual for the exact cassette rather than relying on memory.

Mistake 4: Forcing a Cassette That Is Not Aligned

When a rider finds the cassette not fitting freehub splines, the natural reaction is often to push harder. With HG, that usually makes the problem worse.

HG sprockets have one wider spline or groove. If the wider sections are not aligned, the sprocket stops before reaching its correct position. Shimano’s installation instructions specifically require the wide groove in the freehub to be aligned with the wide protrusion on the sprocket.

Remove the cassette and check for:

  • Incorrect spline alignment.

  • A sprocket or spacer installed backward.

  • A burr or deep notch on the freehub.

  • Dirt, dried grease, or packaging material behind the cassette.

  • A loose sprocket caught at an angle.

  • A cassette made for another driver standard.

  • An extra spacer stuck to the back of the cassette.

A cassette should slide into position with controlled hand pressure. If it only moves when struck or levered, stop. Forcing it can damage the freehub splines, lockring threads, or individual sprockets.

Deep marks on an aluminum freehub can sometimes make cassette removal or installation more difficult. Light cosmetic marking and a severely raised burr are not the same problem. When material has visibly deformed or the cassette cannot seat flat, the freehub should be inspected before installation continues.

Mistake 5: Tightening Before the Cassette Is Fully Seated

A lockring is not designed to pull a badly aligned cassette into place. Before tightening an HG lockring, press the cassette inward and confirm that every sprocket and internal spacer sits flat. The smallest sprocket must engage the splines rather than resting on top of them.

Start the lockring by hand for several turns. If it feels rough, stops immediately, or sits crooked, remove it and inspect the threads. Cross-threading can create the illusion of a tight cassette while damaging the lockring or freehub.

Shimano lists a 30–50 N·m tightening range in its referenced cassette instructions. Use the value and tool specified for your cassette. Extra torque will not correct a missing spacer, wrong cassette, damaged thread, or incorrect freehub.

Why a Cassette Wobbles After Installing New Wheels

Install the wheel correctly and secure the thru-axle according to the frame instructions. Hold the largest sprocket and check for side-to-side movement.

If the cassette and freehub move together, the issue may be inside the hub: an incompletely seated freehub, missing washer, incorrect end cap, axle play, or bearing adjustment. Do not try to cure hub play by adding a cassette spacer. A spacer changes the cassette stack; it does not repair the hub.

If the cassette is tight but shifting is poor, check indexing and hanger alignment. A different hub can place the cassette slightly differently relative to the frame, so a small derailleur adjustment may be needed. Skipping under load can also come from mismatched chain and cassette wear.

  1. Check for axial cassette movement.

  2. Install the wheel fully and secure the axle.

  3. Shift through every gear in a repair stand.

  4. Check that the chain does not overshift into the spokes or frame.

  5. Test under light load before sprinting or climbing hard.

  6. Recheck the cassette, rotor clearance, axle, and shifting after a short ride.

No spacer can make an HG cassette fit an XDR driver, and tightening cannot make an XDR cassette fit an HG body.

Replacement freehubs are hub-specific. They must match the hub shell, engagement system, axle, bearings, seals, and end caps. A freehub that looks similar is not automatically interchangeable.
